Data Scientist with Excel

The role of data scientist is perhaps currently one of the most sought-after IT professions and is certainly one of the professions of the future. Many Italian universities are preparing to offer dedicated university courses or even degrees, such as the master's degree at the University of Pisa.

A data scientist is a professional who uses his or her knowledge of computer science, mathematics, and economics to analyze data and extract information from it. Our society, now living in the era of big data, has many data sources available, but the real challenge is extracting useful information from this data.

In this post, we'll play data scientist using the essential features of spreadsheets, and Excel in particular. To get started, you need to know that:

  • A spreadsheet is a software that automates calculations
  • A spreadsheet looks like a table, where each element is called a cell
  • Each cell has a name, given by the intersection of the column and the row in which it is located (e.g., B1, D10, etc.)
  • The cells of a spreadsheet can contain data or formulas
  • Formulas allow you to perform calculations by referring to cells

The example case chosen is a real-world task and relates to vaccination data administered to combat COVID-19. You can follow the video tutorial using the link. below.
